Mapping the Journey to Higher Education with KIPP Through College

Charter and traditional public schools team up for college-bound kids

College preparation begins years before high school graduates don their caps and gowns, but for too many students, applying to college can be a confusing process and preparation begins too late. However, for high school senior Tyler Sims, the path to college was clear because of the KIPP Through College program.

“I can’t imagine having to go through the college selection process without the Lee-KIPP partnership because it has proven to be an irreplaceable resource for me,” Tyler said.

KIPP Through College was developed by KIPP Delta Public Schools and has partnered with local traditional public schools like Lee Senior High School in Marianna, Arkansas, where Tyler attends. The program begins tracking students when they enter 11th grade and encourages them to take Advanced Placement courses, participate in leadership programs, take the ACT, visit universities and learn about financial aid options. By their senior year, many students have already planned their college essays, have letters of recommendation in hand and know where they will apply.

“This partnership is the essence of what charter schools are all about – the freedom to be innovative and share our successes with others,” said Scott Shirey, executive director of KIPP Delta. “We are happy to provide support to our surrounding school districts by becoming a higher education resource for students and families.”

While Tyler’s classroom and extra-curricular achievements made higher education opportunities possible, his participation in the KIPP Through College program helped him navigate the college admission process, apply for scholarships and bring clarity to the decision-making process. After graduation, he will attend the University of Notre Dame with a full financial aid and scholarship package.

“I’m going to Notre Dame because of the support I received from my mother, grandmother, and KIPP Through College,” Tyler said. “The KIPP Through College program and my advisor, Erin Handley, have provided me with valuable resources. I’ve been constantly encouraged to strive to reach my goals.”

Although Notre Dame is a long way from Arkansas, his KIPP Through College advisor will follow Tyler every step of the way by staying in contact with him and helping ensure he meets important deadlines such as class registration and financial aid.
