Northwest Arkansas is getting ready for the new academic year, and the anticipation in the region is palpable. At the Walton Family Foundation, we believe all families should have access to a high-quality education. Over the last year, we’ve worked with regional leaders to provide educational options that accommodate the needs of every child.
We support innovative programs in district public schools, like the new Honors Academy in Rogers Public Schools. The academy will help 600 students over three years with college prep and matriculation through individualized support. The faculty is paying special attention to students of color, English-language learners and students from economically disadvantaged homes. We are continuing our partnership with the Ignite Program at Bentonville Public Schools. Now in its second year, the program provides students with training in high-skill, in-demand jobs.
Our investments in high-performing charter schools are delivering results as well. Northwest Arkansas Classical Academy is among the top-performing schools on the state’s standardized tests, and the Arkansas Arts Academy was recently recognized as an Exemplary School by the Arts School Network. Over the next year, Haas Hall Academy will work on expansion plans in Springdale, giving another community access to the state’s highest-ranked school.
And just last week, Thaden School, a new independent school in Bentonville, shared plans to open in the fall of 2017 with grades 7 and 9. Thaden’s approach to a balanced education in small-class settings means students will have access to challenging math and science courses, creative interaction with the arts and the competitive drive of athletic activities. The announcement that one-fourth of the student body will receive full to partial financial assistance also demonstrates a commitment to accessibility.
Education plays a central role in our efforts to improve the quality of life in the region. We believe supporting these options will lead to a world-class system of schools for all families.
