Fayetteville City Parks are on the Rise with Mount Kessler

Promoting outdoor recreation and preserving an Arkansas treasure for future generations

The opening of the Razorback Regional Greenway on May 2, 2015 was a milestone event in northwest Arkansas as our region now has more than 300 miles of trails to enjoy.

Approximately one year earlier, another important milestone occurred in the trail development initiative when the Walton Family Foundation provided a $1.5 million matching grant to the City of Fayetteville for the purchase of 328 acres on Mount Kessler. The land is now part of Fayetteville’s city park system and is used exclusively for recreation.

Thousands of local residents and visitors use the park’s hiking and biking trails, trail heads and pavilions. Interpretive signage helps guide people to points of interest and amenities.

Currently, the City of Fayetteville is in the process of developing a Trails Master Plan to guide future trail development efforts on Mount Kessler. That detailed plan will be completed in summer 2015.

"Support from the Walton Family Foundation was a pivotal element in our desire to make this property a public asset that enhances the quality of life for our residents. We believe the recreational opportunities provided at Mount Kessler will undoubtedly help Fayetteville retain and attract talent to our region."   - Jeremy Pate, City of Fayetteville Development Services Director
